Crisps Thin slices of fried potato (British English). I ate a bag of crisps for lunch.
Irritating Annoying. The buzzing fly was irritating.
Traits Personal qualities or characteristics. Kindness is one of her best traits.
Self-defence Protecting yourself from harm. She took a self-defence class.
Toaster A machine for making toast. The bread is in the toaster.
Wrist The joint between your hand and arm. I hurt my wrist playing tennis.
Getting laid Informal: having sex. He joked about getting laid.
Decay To slowly rot or break down. The old wood showed signs of decay.
Coherent Clear and easy to understand. She gave a coherent explanation.
Envelope A paper cover for a letter. Put the letter in an envelope.
Sauce A liquid added to food for flavour. This pasta needs more sauce.
Port A harbour where ships stop. The ship arrived at the port.
Bricks Rectangular blocks used for building. The house is made of bricks.
Killer Someone or something that kills. The detective searched for the killer.
Nightgown Clothing worn to bed. She wore a warm nightgown.
Homophone A word that sounds like another but has a different meaning. “Sea” and “see” are homophones.
Compete To try to win against others. They compete every weekend.

Chemicals Substances made or used in chemistry. Be careful with those chemicals.

Speculation Guessing without enough evidence. The story is only speculation.
Scarcity A shortage of something. Water scarcity is a serious problem.
Fine Good or acceptable. Everything is fine now.
Investigating Looking carefully to find facts. Police are investigating the accident.
Domicile A person’s permanent home. His domicile is in London.
Mud Wet, soft earth. My shoes are covered in mud.
Rinsed Washed quickly with water. I rinsed the cup.
Chauvinist Someone who believes their group (often men) is superior. His chauvinist comments upset people.
Flatulent Producing a lot of gas. Beans can make people flatulent.
Engrained (usually “ingrained”) Deeply fixed or established. Good habits become ingrained over time.
Cretin An insulting word for a very foolish person. Don’t kick the volleyball you spastic.
Spastic An old insulting term. British insult for calling someone really dumb and stupid or incapable, mentally and pysically Kelly cant remember the dance routine, OMG, she’s such a spastic.
Quantitative Related to numbers or amounts. The survey included quantitative data.
Qualitative Related to qualities or descriptions rather than numbers. The interview gave qualitative feedback.
